Teemu Asunmaa, 34, along with his co-driver Ville Mannisenmäki, 26, have won the second round of the Finnish Rally Championship, the Auto Sorsa Riihimäki-ralli. The rally, which consisted of almost 100 special stage kilometres, was Asunmaa’s first win of the season.

Asunmaa started the rally, held in challenging conditions, cautiously with a sixth fastest time for special stage one. On the second stage Asunmaa was third fastest. By the time of the first service break Asunmaa was sixth, 7,9 seconds off the lead.

-We took it causiously at first to get familiar with the challenging conditions. The smaller roads had a lot of loose snow and the bigger roads were well ploughed. The Pirelli tire is biting even better than expected and now we have the confidence to drive more aggressively the next set of stages.

The more aggressive drive yielded immediate results as the fastest time on SS3 elevated Asunmaa into the lead of the rally. On the fourth stage Asunmaa was fourth fastest and at the leg-ending special stage five Asunmaa was fifth. By the time of evening service Asunmaa was sharing the lead of the rally.

-Third stage was really good. Now we need to find even more pace for the evening. We’ll attach our Lazer extra high beams and go at it. It’s really close but nothing’s decided yet.

On the last leg, driven in the darkness, Asunmaa drove an impressive set of fastest times for special stages six and seven. On the rally ending special stage Asunmaa was third fastest securing his victory by a margin of 22,3 seconds.

-We should have utilised our starting spot better during the morning, but the cleaner roads of the afternoon suited us better after all. This is what we set out to achieve and we achieved it.

Asunmaa’s first win of the season elevates him to fourth place in the FRC standing. Asunmaa’s successful weekend couldn’t have realised without the wide support of his team and cooperation partners.

-A great thank you for all of our cooperation partners and our service crew. A special thank you for Pirelli, the tires were working flawlessly in the set of mixed conditions for the whole rally. Now we focus on the next round of FRC in Kuopio in a month. We’ll hop behind the wheel of our Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo next time the next weekend in Rally Sarma in Latvia.

Finnish Rally Championship continues in Kuopio from 4th to 5th of March.
